Our History

Today that same clinic has grown by leaps and bounds and stands tall as CMS Hospital, with more than 23 departments.

In the year 1933, Dr. C K Stephen decided to start the first clinic of Thodupuzha town (a remote village in the tribal district of Idukki in South India) to cater to the region’s medical needs. A graduate of Stanley Medical School, Madras, he was eager to offer medical services to his hometown and surrounding villages which till then, had no such facilities. Coming from a humble background, Dr. Stephen also understood the need for the facilities to be economical for the residents of the region and hence ensured that the facilities were not just affordable by all but often free for the needy.

During the 70s, both his sons joined the hospital practice after graduating as doctors. Dr. Joseph Stephen specialised as General Surgeon & joined the hospital after receiving his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, United Kingdom. Dr. C. S. Stephen started practicing family medicine. Over the next 5 decades, the duo helped establish the hospital as one of the most reliable and efficient healthcare facilities in town.
